Hartford Parks & Outdoors: Pike Lake & More
Hiking the Ice Age Trail, swimming at Pike Lake, the outdoor pool, and the city's parks.
Published June 1, 2026
When it comes to the outdoors, Hartford's parks are the town's strongest card. Sitting at the western edge of the Kettle Moraine, Hartford puts real hiking, a lake beach, a standout outdoor pool, and a run of city parks within a few minutes of downtown. Whether you want to hike a stretch of the Ice Age Trail, swim, or just find a park for the afternoon, here is how the outdoors works here and where to go.
What outdoor things are there to do in Hartford?
The short version: hike the Ice Age Trail at Pike Lake, swim at the lake beach or the outdoor aquatic center, and use the city's parks, of which Hartford has around twenty. The Kettle Moraine setting is what makes it more than a town-park kind of place, with real forest, glacial hills, and lakes right at the edge of the built-up area, so you are never more than a few minutes from somewhere genuinely worth walking. Holy Hill's basilica and observation tower sit a short drive southwest for the long view over the whole region, and the wider Kettle Moraine offers hiking, biking, and, in winter, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. For a small city, the range is unusual: a National Scenic Trail, a swimming lake, a standout outdoor pool, a boating lake, and a walkable riverside trail, all within or just beyond the town limits. Outdoors is the reason a lot of people come to Hartford, and it is the thing the town does best.
Hiking the Ice Age Trail at Pike Lake
The Pike Lake Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest carries a segment of the Ice Age Trail, the long-distance National Scenic Trail that winds more than a thousand miles across Wisconsin, following the edge of the last glaciation. The Pike Lake stretch is one of the more rewarding day-hike sections in the area: it climbs through hardwood forest to Powder Hill and a summit tower with a view over the lake and the surrounding kettles and moraines, the glacial hills and hollows the region is named for. It is best under fall color but good in any warm-season month, and the network of trails in the unit gives you options from an easy lakeside walk to a longer climb. You will need a Wisconsin state park sticker to use the unit; check the Wisconsin DNR for the current daily and annual rates, and note where the trailhead parking is before you go. It is the single best outdoor half-day in Hartford, and it is right at the edge of town.
Pike Lake Beach and swimming
Pike Lake has a swimming beach that opens in summer, a straightforward, family-friendly place to cool off after a hike or spend a whole afternoon by the water. It is part of the same Pike Lake Unit, so you can pair a morning on the trail with an afternoon at the beach without moving far, which makes for an easy, low-cost family day. The lake is small and calm, good for swimming and paddling rather than powerboating, and the setting, ringed by state forest, is quieter than the busier lakes closer to Milwaukee. Bring your own gear and plan around the daytime hours; like the trail, it falls under the state park sticker.
The Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center
Hartford's outdoor waterpark is a genuine draw, and better than you would expect from a town this size. The Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center has one of the few outdoor 50-meter pools in Wisconsin, plus a lazy river, two water slides (one with a two-person raft), a two-tier diving well, zero-depth entry for little ones, a sand play area, and water basketball, with concessions on site. It runs on a summer season, roughly late May through late August, with open-swim hours in the afternoons and evenings and special Thursday-night swims. Daily admission is modest and season passes are available, which makes it a genuine value for families spending real time in town. For swimming outside those months, the indoor Hartford Family Aquatic Center keeps lap lanes and a separate warm-water therapy pool going year-round, so the town has a pool option in any season, summer or deep winter.
When the outdoor season closes, the Hartford Family Aquatic Center takes over indoors, with lap lanes, a large water slide, a toddler play feature, and a warm-water pool for year-round swimming, lessons, and water aerobics.
City parks and Cedar Lake
Beyond Pike Lake, Hartford has a large family park and lake access nearby, and around twenty city parks in total, more green space than a town this size usually manages. Washington County Family Park gives you open space, trails, and picnic room for a low-key afternoon, and it hosts a buckskinners rendezvous encampment in the fall, a genuinely local piece of living history. The Cedar Lake Yacht Club is the point of access for boating on Cedar Lake, one of the bigger lakes in the area and a draw for sailing and powerboating. The Rubicon River paved trail runs through the center of town and links several of the smaller city parks along the way, which makes for an easy walk or bike close to downtown without needing to drive out to the state forest. Between them, the parks cover everything from a quick playground stop to a full day on the water.
Golf and recreation nearby
Golfers have good options just outside town. The Holy Hill area to the southwest has courses set in wooded, rolling terrain, including a large full-service facility in the Kettle Hills area, and Erin Hills, which hosted the US Open in 2017, is within reach for a bigger day out on one of the best-known courses in the state. These sit outside Hartford proper, so treat them as nearby rather than in-town, but they round out the recreation picture if golf is part of your trip. In winter, the same Kettle Moraine terrain that makes for good hiking becomes cross-country skiing and snowmobiling country when there is snow on the ground, so the outdoor season here really does run year-round if you dress for it. For the rest of what fills a day here, see the other things to do in Hartford, and if you are timing a visit around the pool season or the fall color, the best time to visit for the outdoors can help you pick the month.
